I volunteered for a position as a teacher’s assistant at my sons’ infant school, to help with reading, playtime, and preparing meals. I was prevented from doing so after the Headmistress of the school received a complaint from the mothers of other children, demanding to know how the school would protect their children from the risk of an an unaccompanied man in the classroom. She explained that policy required volunteers to be accompanied at all times and she didn’t have the resources for volunteering fathers. The school regulator and parent association allowed her to relax policy for mothers who volunteered because they were assumed to present no risk to children.
