I first started to notice sexual harassment at the age of twelve. Men shouting at me from vans and beeping at me as I walked in the street. Men shouting ‘hey sexy legs’ at me. Men following me home in their cars. Men shouting ‘show us your tits’ when I was walking to school, in my uniform. It didn’t take long for feeling unsafe to become my default mode for being outside. I even remember my dad suggesting, as he became aware that this was happening to me, that maybe it was because I was walking provocatively. Nobody ever tried to rationalize why grown men were sexually harassing a child though.
