my mom and I arrived at our hotel last night and the valet wasn’t completely paying attention to us but as soon as a man and his family pulled up about 10 minutes later while we were unpacking our car, the valet was actively trying to get the guy’s attention and when we brought it to his attention that we were there first he told us he needed to attend to the man and his family first and that we would have to wait.

I travel every week for work, and find it quite uncomfortable sometimes going to the restuarant in the evening (as the only women ever in the hotel bar/restaurant). This week, as i went to pay, a random person at the bar decided it was appropriate to ask my room number because it was funny for him and his drunk mate. I felt this would NEVER have happened to the other 20 men sat in the bar and considering i had my engagement ring on, found it highly disrespectful. It wasn’t chatting me up, it was just like “you’re a woman and we can have a laugh here”. He then continued watching as i had to tell the bar lady my room number to pay for my food- which then left me feeling uneasy that they now knew my room number. Then, i go to get a taxi this morning and before i have even got in the taxi, the driver has called me “luv” twice. Again- would this happen to a man? What kind of manners is that? I said before he even switched the engine on “let’s make a rule here, if you want me to pay you for this journey you can stop calling me “luv” as it’s very patronising” . He apologised, but now i have to spend the whole taxi journey feeling uncomfortable. Not many women agree to travel excessively like i do, and i can see why. I am refusing to be bound to my room 4 nights a week, and want to be able to get out, go to restaurants or in a taxi without either being harrassed or made to feel uncomfortable.

My sexual assault story I was on a trip in Dubai, in a fancy hotel. There was a staff member who would make sure that we have everything we need and he would bring us small complimetaries. So he was doing his job. I had been in my hotel room alone, because my parents were on the beatch or else were. He had come multiple times over to do his job, but the man would chat to me in a overly friendly way. To be polite I smiled and thanked him for his work etc. Few times he had done the same thing, checking up on us. My parents had noticed the man was being overly friendly to me but thought nothing of it. One day I opened the door to see him again and I let him in, he brought macarons and started chatting. Since Dubai is very warm compared to were I was from. I was wearing a flowy crop top and very loose pants, kindda like belly dancers. He commented on that I looked like a belly dancer. He layed his hands on my hips and I don’t know what or WHY in the ever loving god I went with it. He let go and did that again, but brushing his hands literaly under my shirt to the point were my bra was. I felt uncomfotable about him in general so I said I’m going to shower, could you please leave. He left. After that I talked to my friends about what had just happened.. I realised that 5 star hotel staff are NOT supposed to touch you. As I realised I started having a panic attack of some sort. I had to go accross the hotel to the other side to get my parents. While sobbing, I told what he did. We went to the helpful guidance lady and told this happened. She called security and we went to our room. Security came and I was sobbing like crazy! I had just expirienced my sexual assult. At the age of 15.. 15 can you imagine!? In my hotel room, by hotel staff! They said that this is the first time in their history that this had ever happened. So I told the security about the incident and they offered to call the police. I knew that it was just this persons horrible acts and bringing the police there, it would cause negative reputation to the hotel and it is no way their fault. So I let the security guys handle the situation. In Dubai they are very very serious about a womans safety, there are even seperate areas for only women on trains so they could feel safe being alone. They have taxis for only women, driven by women so they can feel safe. Also i got offered to have literal bodyguards by my side, if i felt unsafe. Of course I didn’t take them, since as it was just that one person. After thinking would have been fun to say I have had bodyguards but I had literaly been through trauma. Aftermath of this all is that I felt violated, attacked, unsafe and discusted with myself. It was not me who did it, I was only a victim. Sometimes thinking back on it, I think if I did the right thing? Was I just overreacting? I have had to tell myself that no, it was not my fault. He did very wrong and I reacted as you should. Sexual assault is not to be taken lightly or just normal, ever. Women in general are being catcalled, assaulted, raped and abused and they might just be quiet. Thinking about my feelings of the expirience, I try my best to be ok about it, but as I’m writing this is still remeber like it was three minutes ago. Sexual assault is going to scar the victim.

Just checked into a really nice (five star) hotel with my extended family and found no record of the room under my name, instead it was under my husband’s (we have different surnames). We discovered that when my Mum made the booking she was specifically asked to provide the names of the men, so the same embarrassing “no we can’t find your booking” also happened to my sister who also didn’t change her name when she married. For such a lovely hotel with such great service this unspoken assumption that no woman would be the “primary” guest was pretty offensive.
