I was hanging out with some friends and a criminal attorney we had met the night before. This man is very involved in justice cases and getting people off death row by proving their innocence. He made a comment about how someone commenting on my hips the night before was uncalled for. I agreed it was a little much, but the comment was at least done softly and not the worst of things I’ve heard from strangers about my body. Then this lawyer is about to show us a Youtube video documenting a bunch of his work. He leans into me and tells me, “Prepare to get moist.” I called him out on it later and he apologized. I told him it was surprising given his history and his apologetic behavior for someone else’s offensive actions.

I was sitting in my Computer Science class logging onto my computer when I heard some boys making sexist comments about how “women should stay in the kitchen” and “if ahything has gone wrong within a home, the wife will be behind it”. naturally, I was upset by these comments but chose not to say anything since I was the minority (there were about two females in the room at the time). What made it worse was when a guy I knew relatively well started openly slagging women off in front of me, knowing my views on feminism and how women should be treated – equally. I didn’t know what to do, but I decided to challenge him. He began saying even worse things to all the girls in the room. Finally, the most horrible thing happened. My friend – a girl I’d know for about five years – began to laugh and agree with him, saying things such as: “Oh, good one!” (referring to his joke) and other such comments. I got so upset that I ran from the classroom at the end of the lesson. I know that this situation wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been, but I’m just so fed up of people thinking that it’s funny to slander women, and for others to agree just because they’d get retribution if they didn’t. Sometimes, I feel like I have no voice, and even if I do, people forget what I’ve said and reverted to their old ways. I’m just…tired. So done with their crap. – Ying Yue, teenager

Okay, so as you grow older you kinda learn to expect men to look down on you as a women, so it comes as a real shock when a fellow WOMAN looks down on you. So, here goes, I was at McDonalds with my dad and we had been waiting for a long time for our meal, after a while my dad sent me up to go and see where it was. As we ordered online, I didn’t have a receipt in my hand so I wasn’t really shocked that the woman didn’t believe me, and looked really sceptical at my story. She didn’t seem to want to listen to me, paying me little respect and acting like I didn’t really exist. After a while of persistently explaining my story to her she came over to where my dad was sitting and she was paying him more respect than me. She called him sir and was apologising for the mistake. She tried to make it up to him as best as she could, so my question is why didn’t she pay me the same respects? Why is it that women can’t seem to respect other woman as much as they respect men? It’s sexist and rude.

The other day I was playing cricket at school, when a boy walked up to me from behind and felt entitled enough to smack my arse multiple times as I was going into the batting nets. Being the sassy 13 year old feminist I am, I shut him down; explained what a mysogynist he is and told him that women/girls are not here to be looked at and be sexualised. Frankly I would like to be aloud to live in a world where I can do sport in the correct clothing with out a chauvinist boy smacking my behind.

I rememeber 10 years ago I was sitting on the London Underground. It was off-peak and not may people in the carriage. A large, older woman opposite me started telling me off for wearing a short skirt. The implication was that I was being irresponsible. I often wore mini-skirts like that at that sort of age (probably early 20s) and i just remember thinking she was really annoying and rude, and I suppose being slightly embarrassed. There was at least one guy sitting near her who looked at me sympathetically but said nothing. I wish I’d told her where to go now!!!! Or maybe told her off back for wearing too many layers.
