sexist jokes

When discussing how disgusting it is that everybody supports famous rapist men who are Scots etc, my (now ex) friend jokingly praised him for it

So in the gym I beat a boy in badminton, him and his friend started “joking” about how women should just stay in the kitchen and cook. I was really hurt and it wasn’t the first time that they made an offensive joke so I decided to write a mini essay on everyday sexism at school by boys, and posted it on my class Google classroom and I ended up getting bashed for inaccurate views of society by the boys’ friend. They wrote to the girls that were supporting me that, they shouldn’t believe me because I was lying. The next day at school, the teacher as well focused on the importance of online rules rather than explaining the problem to the boys.

1. Various catcalling and verbal slur incidents throughout my life – cannot count all the times from when I was younger. One more recent in the middle of the day on a busy main road when a bin lorry curb-crawled next to me and bin men hung out the window. It was very frightening and I did report it to the council straight away, but unfortunately was too shocked to take a picture of the lorry at the time. Will change to the other side of the road if I meet a group of men and I am on my own, especially evening and night time. 2. A girlfriend and I was out in town for a few drinks a few years ago, and were walking back through a busy street when we met a drunk guy on his own and unknown to us, who totally unprovoked staggered towards me and tried to kick me (!). He missed and we ran away. Didn’t report. 3. An older man (at least 3 times the size of me) from the street where we used to live knocked on the door to ask about something, and suddenly forced himself on me and gave me a hug and a kiss. Didn’t report. 4. A man I bought a computer from (off an ads page), when picking it up and after paying, pushed me up against the wall and tried to come on to me. Managed to get away. Didn’t report. 5. Holiday in Florida, busy Miami beach, a man is sat turned towards me with his legs apart and his hands inside his shorts, masturbating while trying to make eye contact with me. Didn’t report. 6. Father-in-law who generally is lovely man, but sadly often make sexist jokes, about ‘women’s place in the kitchen’, lots of ‘marriage/wife’ jokes where it’s always about how wives are trapping men, etc. He says it is just a “joke” and he is only “winding me up”. Mother-in-law told me once she thought my husband should “treat” me to a tumble drier… She also uses language about our future holidays where I am always constructed as passive (“he should take you there”, instead of “you guys should go there”). We both drive, earn a living, and I have a PhD.
