I work at a bar restaurant. It is a boys club of course. But I should be specific. I´´l give you couple of examples. The owners are men. The majority of the chef´s are men(the women are assisting chefs ofc), there is one shift manager that is female, we even have a Gin and Tonic menu named only after MEEEEEEEN!! But,.. not to lose here as well, yesterday a boy that is 5 years younger than me, who is working as a chef in another restaurant, took an extra shift as a waitor and asked to be positioned at the bar. Of course while he is the little brother of the manager he got the position and none of the rest of us who have been working there longer and not just an extra shift!!Important here is to mention that the guy is the little brother of the manager. Anyways, at the end of the shift we are allowed to get one drink if we want to. When I finished, I asked my shift manager if I could get a drink and he said of course, why dont you ask the guys to make you one. i did ask this guy and the answer was: you have to pay! with a bodily attitude as if he is a big piece of bulk. I said excuse me? He laughted and said you have to pay. I replied what are you? Our boss or?… super angry. Then, the guy prepared drinks for the guys in the kitchen and said to me: why dont you make one yourself? I was FUUUUURIOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUS Now, I wonder.. Is this whole behaviour: a) a result of me being a rather weird person that the bartender didnt want to assist? b) the guy is the brother of the manager so he thinks he has the right to be bossy? c) he just treats women(even those of better and longer experience) different than men? or any of the given choices above as a combo? Just for you to think for yourself and contemplate.

Waitress

I am 23 years old and just graduated with a bachelor in social sciences. While at University, i felt treated equally. Never truly felt sexism since my field of study was overpopulated with women anyways. I always worked as a waitress cause I love it. I decided to do a year of full time waiting tables to figure out where I want to move my life. Since I am working full time, i have been bombarded with compliments and numbers and while it was charming in the beginning, i noted a change in my behavior. I started to reduce myself to my female beauty. Since no one asked for my scientific, or political beliefs anymore i kinda.. don’t know how to say it. Because i am being reduced to my outer appearance, i started to define myself over it. I might sound stupid and spoilt, but if all you ever hear all day “Gosh, is that a pretty girl.” you start to believe that all you are is a pretty girl. I fought it by writing all the other things about me in my journal. To keep in mind that I am a good friend, funny and loveable. Not just some drunk fantasy serving drunk men.

Working as a waitress in a tiny local restaurant back home. My boss (the owner) would FREQUENTLY make disgusting comments and behave in an innappropriate way. To name a few… 1) He bit my thigh while I was sat at the bar one day. 2) frequently told me or my friend that we smelled like “pussy juice” if we had seen our boyfriends earlier that day 3) He was a member of a site called “Benaughty.com”. He would call us over to see what we thought of the women on the site, only to be confronted with naked images of girls in sexual positions when he showed us his iPad screen. 4) would smack my ass at LEAST once every shift I wanted to leave that job so many times, but needed the money (it was £7 an hour) and was too scared to tell my parents about what was happening. Both me and my friend who worked there were 17.
