I recently graduated high school and am now going to university to study mechanical engineering. A couple summers ago, I went to an engineering camp comprised of 97 boys and 14 girls, including myself. We were split into teams of 14, with 1 other girl on my team. There were two particular boys who thought me and my fellow female should not voice our opinions on a “man’s line of work” even though we were encouraged by our councilors (one of which was female) to work together equally and respectfully. The councilors said nothing to the boys about their sexism, even when I stood up for myself (very loudly and purposfully). Thankfully, some other guys who I had become friends with had my (and the other girl’s) backs. However, it disgusted me that the boys would not listen to a woman with better ideas and knowledge than them, but would listen to a few words out of another man’s mouth.
